Adam Gregory- “What It Takes”

November 15, 2008 Matt F. Leave a comment

Adam Gregory has had some success in Canada, but he’s finding that the US is a harder place to find it.  His previous single “Crazy Days” was a Top 5 in Canada, but peaked at #33 in the US.  Now, he’s back with “What It Takes,” a song about a man pleading to know everything that it takes to be a woman’s man.  The lyric obviously does not cover new ground, but that’s not a problem if your “touch” or “flavor” on it makes it unique.  It’s really hard to tell if Adam has that on this song at this point.  It seems good enough to me to be another Top 40 hit, but I’m not sure if the US is going to embrace this song any more than that.

Martina McBride- “Ride”

November 15, 2008 Matt F. Leave a comment

No one does inspirational songs like Martina McBride.  No matter whether it’s a balled like “Anyway” or an uptempo song like “This One’s For The Girls,” Martina seems to always find songs that inspire people in one way or the other.  The great thing is, they all sound different!  Martina has one of the best voices in Country Music right now, which is on full display during “Ride.”  She sings the song so well and connects with the inspirational message of the song.

“Ride” relates life to a rollercoaster ride, and encourages everyone to enjoy the ride.  Here’s the chorus:

Life is a roller coaster ride
Time Turns The Wheel and Love Collides
Faith is believing you can close your eyes and touch the sky .
Shine while you have the chance to shine
Laugh even when you want to cry
Hold on tight to what you feel inside and ride…
(copied from http://www.elyrics.net/read/m/martina-mcBride-lyrics/ride-lyrics.html)

Go Martina!  Great job on this song.  I do think it will ultimately fall short of #1, but it’ll easily get itself to the Top 5.  Depending on what other artists and songs are in the Top 5 when she gets there, she may be able to sneak in. However, if some of the males that dominate the charts (Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, etc.) have songs there at the same time, she’ll more than likely not be able to push past them (some guys just always get their songs to the Top 5 no matter the quality of the song).

Chart Prediction- Top 5

Randy Rogers Band- “In My Arms Instead”

November 15, 2008 Matt F. Leave a comment

“In My Arms Instead” is the Randy Rogers Band’s lead single from their current self-titled album, and is their sixth single in the past 3+ years.  If you are asking, who’s the Randy Rogers Band, don’t worry, you’re not alone.  Another of the many “Texas” bands that have music out there, this band has yet to break through with a big hit single.  I don’t even remember their first three singles, have a vague recollection of the 4th, but remember their 5th single (it was vastly underplayed in my opinion).

“In My Arms Instead” is well written, has a unique sound, and is not far from being the band’s breaththrough single.  The song is about a man’s recent loss of the woman he loves, with everywhere he goes reminding him of her.  He wishes she was not in his head, but in his arms instead.

I think the song could be a decent hit (Top 30-Top 40) if it weren’t for the fact that the song’s one weakness is what will keep it from being so–it’s nothing special.  If you look back at recent groups who have been trying to make it (Eli Young Band, Lost Trailers, Whiskey Falls, etc.) they’ve all experience the same thing–trying to get established so their music would be widely accepted.  Eli Young Band had “When It Rains” that did well enough to allow their follow up “Always The Love Songs” to get a chance at being their first big hit.  Lost Trailers had “Holler Back” which got a lot of people’s attention and made their current single “How ‘Bout You Don’t” much more appealing because people knew who they where.  Whiskey Falls has had two Top 40 singles, but still haven’t broken through.  Randy Rogers Band has put more music on the radio than these other bands, so it might be difficult for them to breakthrough unless they find an amazingly great song to record that will get everyone’s attention.

Kenny Chesney- “Down The Road” with Mac McAnally

November 10, 2008 Matt F. Leave a comment

Sometimes people get on Kenny’s case about the music he records.  Yet, his songs always seem to big hits on the charts.  Of course, when the song climbs quickly to #1 and then just spends a week or two there, it’s only making a 3 month (or less) impact on radio.  Even though certain songs, like “Don’t Blink” had great messages, most casual fans found them as lacking in substance or too weak lyrically.  His previous single spent two weeks at #1, but it’ll probably not have much of a lasting impact on people.

Well, Kenny made a genious decision with his next single.  With several collaborative efforts on his Lucky Old Sun album, he chooses “Down The Road,” a barely charted song of Mac McAnally’s from the early 90s that Mac gets to sing an entire verse on in this version.  It’s probably Kenny’s best, and most unique sounding of his singles in quite some time.  Not only am I predicting that Kenny will score a #1 with this song (which will be the first time Mac McAnally has sung on a song that reached #1), I think it’ll replace “Shiftwork” as the “collaborative song” from Kenny that radio stations like to play for years to come.

Chart Prediction- #1

Jewel- “Till It Feels Like Cheating”

November 10, 2008 Matt F. Leave a comment

Sometimes a married couple can get so wrapped up in the world that they slowly begin to drift apart.  This couple needs to make time have a moment to reconnect, which is the main purpose of the song.  Jewel sings with desperation to the man she loves to find a way to reignite the fire.  She pleas to let all inhibitions go and to let the moment consume them enough to make it feel like they are cheating.  The idea is that the sense of cheating will put an excitement into their love that will allow them to flourish once again.

It’s definitely more country sounding than her previous two singles, but I really don’t think it’s as good as either song.  I also think “I Do” was underplayed, and I don’t find any reason for this song to evenr each the same level.

Chart Prediction- Top 50

Toby Keith- “God Love Her”

November 10, 2008 Matt F. 1 comment

“God Love Her” is Toby Keith’s 2nd Single off of That Don’t Make Me A Bad Guy and has already annoyed some people.  The song is about a preacher’s daughter who runs away with a rebel boy.  The part that gets people is that Toby is singing as if he were the rebel in the song since “me” is dropped throughout the entire song.  I say, what’s wrong with that?  It’s a distinct possibility that Toby could be the rebel in this song, but it’s definitely not a possibility that he’d run off with a 17-year old.  The way I see it, this could be a “reminiscent” song because nowhere in the entire song is a reference in the song that makes it 2008.  For all we know, Toby could’ve written this song about an experience from his youth.

The preacher’s daughter running away with the rebel boy is definitely a well-covered subject, but this has Toby unique flair and sound, and it sure is a great song.  I believe Toby easily has another #1 song on his hands, with this one possibly hitting the multi-week level that’s becoming harder and harder for songs to do recently.

Chart Prediction- #1
