Jack Ingram- “Barefoot and Crazy”

March 31, 2009 Matt F. Leave a comment

Okay, I get that this is a “summer fun” song.  It sounds like a summery song and it is sure to appeal to a broad group of people.  However, where was a song like this last year?  We are in late March, a time when some artists chose to release a summery song because it’d be hitting it’s stride in June/July.  Last year, the only true ”summer” song was “All Summer Long” by Kid Rock.  I like this song much better than that and would’ve rather had this song out last year than the Kid Rock song.

Now, for where I think this song will peak.  I can see this song getting some good initial airplay, then slowly building momentum as summer draws near…then, something better will come along and this song will probably peak somewhere between #11 and #20.  I don’t normally characterize a song as a Top 15, but if I did, I’d think this song has a chance to make it there.  Unfortunately, I don’t Jack is a popular enough artist to get this song Top 10.  “That’s A Man” merely cracked the Top 20 and a lot of people loved that song.  It’ll be interesting to see how this song is received by the vast majority of the audience.

CML Chart for 3/29 to 4/4/09 now online

March 30, 2009 Matt F. Leave a comment

This week’s CML Chart features a brand new #1 as Darius Rucker’s “It Won’t Be Like This For Long” captures the spot away from Jake Owen.  Jake’s single, “Don’t Think I Can’t Love You” comes in at #2 this week after Darius’ song won the right to have it’s Impression rating increased, therefore having his Score now higher than Jake’s.  With the CML Chart Interactive now in place, it has become more difficult for a song to receive a perfect score, but Darius was able to do so this week.

Jason Aldean’s “She’s Country,” another CMLCI winner, climbs up six places from #9 to #3.  Brooks & Dunn’s “Cowgirls Don’t Cry” fall to #4, while Martina McBride’s “Ride” holds steady at #5 this week.

The highest debut this week is the sensational new song from Brad Paisley, “Then,” which debuts at #30.  Other new songs this week are Jack Ingram’s “Barefoot and Crazy” (#58) and Jonathan Singleton & The Grove’s “Livin’ In Paradise” (#60).

Brad Paisley- “Then”

March 30, 2009 Matt F. Leave a comment

Wow…all I have to say is…ten in a row!  “Then” is arguably the best song Brad has ever recorded and is arugably the best song during his current streak of #1’s.  This song will keep this streak alive.  If it doesn’t, then there is something wrong with radio…

Jessica Harp- “Boy Like Me”

March 26, 2009 Matt F. 2 comments

Jessica is one half of the duo The Wreckers (the other half is Michelle Branch), but they are working on individual projects for now.  For Jessica’s solo debut single, she sings about finding a boy that is just like her and how they get along so well.  I like the sound and think Jessica has a good voice, but I’m a little curious to see whether the subject will catch on or not.

To be honest, I think if she does really well on her own, that we may not see The Wreckers anymore, meaning no “sophomore” album for the duo.  I do think Jessica is going to do well with this song, but she may be limited if people prefer to hear The Wreckers over her.  It’s not like The Wreckers are Brooks & Dunn, who at this point in her career can do solo projects and people would find it extremely interesting.

CML Chart Interactive for 4/5 to 4/11

March 25, 2009 Matt F. Leave a comment

The polls for the CMLCI for the chart week of 4/5 to 4/11/09 are now on the CML Chart Interactive page (click link at top of page).

Lee Ann Womack’s “Last Call” (a 90 Impression rated song) and Jack Ingram’s “That’s A Man” (a 70 song) will be removed from the chart for that week.  Since there is no 100 songs being removed, there will not be any 90 songs moving up to 100.  There are still songs to move up to 90, 80, and 70 that need your help.  Visit the CMLCI page to vote.

Phil Vassar- “Prayer of a Common Man”

March 25, 2009 Matt F. Leave a comment

While I like the sentiment of this song, it doesn’t really jump out and grab everyone’s attention.  Phil’s previous single, “I Would,” experienced that same problem.  While people will like what this song says, like this song because it is a Phil Vassar song, and/or like the way it sounds, it doesn’t have enough of its good elements to be a big hit single.

Keith Urban- “Kiss A Girl”

March 24, 2009 Matt F. Leave a comment

Here’s comes Keith Urban!  Fresh off his 3rd #1 within a year (counting “Start A Band” with Brad Paisley), Keith has released the second single off his soon-to-be-released album Defying Gravity.  “Kiss A Girl” has that springy/summery feel and sound to it, making this a great time of year to release it.  The lyrics are about getting over a breakup through a short recovery plan–just kissing a girl.  It’s simple, it’s relative, it’s good.

While this isn’t the best Keith song ever, and many people do not like it at all, there isn’t really any reason this song is not going to fly to the top of the charts.  Artists get “chart momentum” every now and then, and Keith has that now (but not as much as Brad Paisley has).

March 23, 2009 Matt F. Leave a comment

CML Top 60

Quick Overview:

After spending four straight weeks at #2, Jake Owen captures his first CML Chart #1 with “Don’t Think I Can’t Love You.”  After three weeks at #1, Brooks & Dunn’s “Cowgirls Don’t Cry” slides to #2.  The Top 5 is rounded out with Darius Rucker, Dean Brody, and Martina McBride (Brody and McBride each won the CMLCI poll their song was in, resulting in big jumps up the charts).

The highest debut this week is Keith Urban’s “Kiss A Girl,” which enters the Top 60 at #54.  Also new this week is the latest effort from Phil Vassar (“Prayer of a Common Man”) and new stuff from Jessica Harp (“Boy Like Me”), who was 1/2 of the duo The Wreckers.

Voting for the CML Chart Interactive for the week of 3/29 to 4/4/09 is still ongoing and will conclude on the 25th at 11am EST.

Toby Keith- “Lost You Anyway”

March 19, 2009 Matt F. Leave a comment

Sometimes, change is not enough.  “Lost You Anyway” is a song about a man realzing that changing for the woman he loves will not keep him from losing her.  It’s a great song and should keep the momentum Toby is building up going.
