Jason Aldean- “Big Green Tractor”

May 29, 2009 Matt F. Leave a comment

Fresh off his second #1 single, Jason is back with an interesting song about taking a girl for a ride on his big green tractor. While the whole country boy thing has been done often lately, Jason’s vocals and the arrangement make it a nice listen and a surefire hit. The timing of the single’s release is also good as this is one type of song people like to hear come summertime.

Phil Vassar- “Bobbi With An I”

May 24, 2009 Matt F. 1 comment

Say what?  When I first saw the title I thought it was about some girl who spells her name with an I instead of a Y.  Then, I started listening to it and the Bobbi is a guy who dresses in women’s clothes when he goes out on the town.  Bobbi is a tough guy, which makes this ironic, but the song is really weird…It would make an interesting album cut, but as a lead single to an upcoming album?  It feels to me like Phil is trying hard to find a big hit to generate buzz about his next album.  If this is the best they’ve got, then I know I won’t be buying it.

I’m sure the song will get enough airplay to be a decent hit, but I cannot see it doing anything more than sneaking into the Top 40.

Heidi Newfield- “What Am I Waiting For”

May 24, 2009 Matt F. Leave a comment

Sometimes we are left to wonder why we are waiting for something we know is never going to happen, and that’s what this song keeps asking.  The lyric is fine, but the music isn’t.  It just kept feeling to me like something was missing at the end of the verses and that there were more things that could’ve been done vocally to make this a really outstanding song.  As is, it just doesn’t really appeal to me much at all.  I know there are enough Heidi fans out there to get radio stations to play this song.  The question is, will enough people play this to make it another solid hit for her?  I don’t think so.

Trace Adkins- “All I Ask For Anymore”

May 23, 2009 Matt F. Leave a comment

After a quirky single like “Marry For Money,” the best thing Trace could do was release a real down to earth single, and that’s what he has done with “All I Ask For Anymore.”  The story is about a man who has progressed in his life from asking for selfish things to asking for his family to be safe and sound.  It’s a song that is sure to resonate with a lot of people and shows the softer side of Trace that a lot of people ask for.

If I were to say there’s one thing to worry about is that the song may not click with a lot of people, especially those who’s faith differs from the man in the song.  This is something that “Muddy Water” I am sure had to contend with, but I’m sure this song’s sentiment is going to attract more than it detracts.

Brooks & Dunn- “Indian Summer”

May 23, 2009 Matt F. Leave a comment

What a unique sounding, really awesome song from Brooks & Dunn.  The only criticism I have of the song is that I feel it’s been released a month or two too early.  The song talks about the fall and falling in love during an Indian Summer.  Well, it’s the end of May.  If they had released this at the beginning of August, this song probably would be in the Top 10 in 5 weeks.

You know when this is all I criticize on a song, then this song is destined for success.  I had one minor criticism of Sugarland’s “It Happens” and it’s the current #1 single as of this post.  I think Brooks & Dunn are heading back to the top of the charts with this song.

Pat Green- “What I’m For”

May 21, 2009 Matt F. Leave a comment

Sometimes, artists and their “people” need to pay attention to their clients (radio stations) when it comes to singles on the radio.  “Country Star” was getting good airplay from many stations, but a lot of stations opted to start playing the title track to his current album either in addition or instead.  As a result, “What I’m For” reached the Billboard Top 50 as an album cut and Pat Green and his people took notice.  “Country Star” was pulled as a single and “What I’m For” became the song of choice.

The song is a good song and the lyric is good–”you don’t have to guess what I’m against when you know what I’m for.”  I really liked “Country Star” and am sad that it wasn’t given a full chance, but “What I’m For” is better and will do much better for Pat.

Martina McBride- “I Just Call You Mine”

May 21, 2009 Matt F. Leave a comment

I have to say that this is one of the “weakest” singles I’ve heard from Martina in a long time.  While I think Martina is a good artist, I think this song lacks enough substance to truly be a big hit for her.  While the lyric is clever, I just feel there’s more that could’ve been done with this song.
