CML Chart 2010 Changes
This page is to outline the changes coming to the CML Chart starting with the chart week of 1/3 to 1/9/10. There will be changes to the formula and the CML Chart Interactive (CMLCI) as a result.
Star Scores will now be referred to as Chart Scores. Some of the other changes that follow give songs a chance to gain points without being voted on so the Star Ratings on songs are not as influential anymore, but will still be very important.
Songs will now have to be voted to a 1-Star Song. I used to give all songs “1 Star” just by being on the chart, but now songs will not be ranked this way anymore. The CMLCI will now include a 5th poll, the “1 Star Poll.” This poll will operate the same way the current “2 Star Poll” does. Now, songs will be voted to 1 Star, 2 Star, 3 Star, 4 Star and 5 Star Ratings.
There will now be 6 songs at each Star Rating at a time. Instead of having five songs at the 3-Star, 4-Star, and 5-Star ratings and 10 songs at the 2-Star Rating, there will now be six at each of the five levels. This means that the entire Top 30 will be voted on through the CMLCI, with an occasional songs slipping in as Star Rated songs fall from the chart.
Chart Scores will be determined by appearances on the Billboard and/or Mediabase 24/7 Charts until voted to 1-Star. A song will received 5 points towards their Chart Score for each appearance on either of these charts, reaching a maximum of 45 points (or 9 apperances). From here, songs will only receive more points as they are voted on in the CMLCI. A 1 Star Song will received a Chart Score of 50, a 2 Star Song a 55, a 3 Star Song a 60, a 4 Star Song a 65, and a 5 Star Song a 70.
The Chart Score will count as 70% of the CML Chart Points. This gives you the reader of this blog more influence on a songs position on the CML Chart.
The Billboard and MediaBase 24/7 Chart Positions for each song will now only be 10% of the CML Chart Points each. A song at #1 on either chart will now receive only 10 points. Songs will have 0.1 points less each place down the chart and will receive 0 points if it is has not yet appeared on that particular chart. A song has to have appeared on either chart in order to be included. Songs that fall out of the Billboard Top 30 and Mediabase 24/7 Top 50 will still receive points as if they were song #31 and #51 respectively, but those point values will now be 7 and 5 points respectively.
The Airplay Bonus will now be 5 points for each chart (10% total for both) and each chart’s Airplay Bonus is now separate. Before, if a song lost airplay on either chart, the song lost Airplay Bonus even if it gained on the other chart. Now, these will be separate as a song will lose 2 points a week for a loss. If a song gains airplay at a later week, it will regain all those points. Songs who lose airplay for 3 straight weeks will now receive -1 points instead of 0, but that will be as low as the score will go. Normally, songs do not last on the chart long enough to have that happen another time.
Songs will not lose Airplay Bonus until the song’s 8th week on the CML Chart. Songs will keep all 10 Airplay Bonus points until their 8th week. If the song is not present on either chart, it will be treated as an airplay loss. This will repeat until the song either reappears on either chart or the song is removed from the CML Chart.
All other aspects stay the same. The 10 week minimum requirement is still in effect. Songs will be removed after three straight weeks of a loss of points overall accompanied by a loss of Airplay Bonus points. Songs that have disappeared from both the Billboard and Mediabase 24/7 charts will still be removed after the first week this happens.
The CML Chart Interactive for the Chart week of 1/3 to 1/9/10 will be set up to get 6 songs at each level. Voting for that will start on December 27th, and there will probably be a good deal of songs to vote for that week so your vote will be important.
